There are many things you probably haven't thought of that can make your San Francisco home the safest in the neighborhood.

First:

Take your name off the mailbox. Criminals can find your home phone number with your first and last name and then will call your home number. Once no one answers the phone they are clear to proceed with their ill intentions.

Second:

Keep bushes and shrubs trimmed low so that thieves cannot hide behind them and go unnoticed.

Third:

Are you guilty of buying a flat screen TV and placing its box outside "next" to the trash can? Doing so is nothing short of an active advertisement that you have something burglars want. Consider cutting up the box into smaller pieces and putting it inside the "recycle bin" of course!

Fourth:

Lock up tools; especially ladders away in a garage so that they cannot be used to break into your home. This way, if someone really wants to get into an upstairs window let them bring their own equipment and risk getting caught in the act.

Fifth:

This is so important! Make sure to have motion sensitive lighting installed on the exterior of your home. The last thing anyone wants is someone snooping around in their yard unnoticed.

Sixth:

Stick a home security services yard sign or two in your front lawn and put stickers on your windows. Doing so lets potential intruder know that you either really have a monitored alarm or at least care enough about keeping your home safe to put up the signs and stickers. Either way a potential intruder will most likely decide to break into home that appears to be more vulnerable.

Seven:

Install a second dead bolt on your homes exterior doors that can only be locked/ unlocked from inside the home. Not only will this help prevent a door from being kicked open but it is a lock that cannot be picked because you can only see it from the inside of the house.

I hope these tips have been helpful. Of course there is not substitute for a monitored home security system but by implementing these ideas you can greatly increase the protection afforded to your home.
